Liability – thou art unnervingly disorienting and wholly unappealing, for thou provoke thy presence in the uncanny of ways, compelling one to unapologetically refrain from seeking, or even accepting thy existence in one’s life. How dismal a performance of your being, for you make one quiver and endure thy miseries in the harrowing preamble of thy path, one that leads to deceit and betrayal, rendering one dependent on others for sustenance, and inviting the drudgery of parlance with the musings of treachery and discord.
Madhumita Sundararaman helms a heartfelt emotional journey in Kaalidhar, where the main protagonist Kaalidhar (a character brilliantly portrayed by Abhishek Bachchan) is ensnared by familial relationships and becomes the target of devious schemes deployed by his own kin. Driven by a singular motive, to usurp his ancestral property and wealth, his brothers weave an intricate web of stratagems, though ultimately in vain. Yet fortune favors the bold, for it alters the entire trajectory of Kaalidhar’s life, regardless of the myriad misfortunes that may befall him.
Being abandoned and left to fend for himself, only to be sought after again for their selfish pursuits, shatters the illusion of a loving family that Kaalidhar had so earnestly strived to build, for the pain of betrayal opens the door to an irrepressible void, a chasm of unhealed wounds so deep that it creates a vortex of unresolved emotions, forcing him relive the images of the past that intensify his bouts of dementia, ultimately rendering him incapable of meeting his day to day needs on his own.
Serendipity! A life-transforming moment set in motion, embodying the potential to steer through an irretrievable charade of impossible situations, an act of providence or mere happenstance, that becomes the catalyst for reshaping Kaalidhar’s world forever. Ballu (essayed by prodigal Daivik Bhagela), an eight-year-old orphan, meanders his way into Kaalidhar’s life, endearing himself through his predictably unrestrained shenanigans and sharp intellect. In Ballu, Kaalidhar discovers not merely a companion, but a savior, a beacon of emotional support, someone he can equivocally call his own. What unfolds between them is a bond that transcends the confines of blood ties and filial expectations: a mutually redemptive connection in which both, through trials and tribulations, come to realize and acknowledge the profound indispensable value of each other’s presence. This tender, loving and nurturing connection between a disillusioned middle-aged man and a spirited young boy brings newfound joy and serenity into Kaalidhar’s life, while Ballu, at last, finds in him a steadfast warmth of a true father-figure.
With Ballu by his side, Kaalidhar rediscovers the importance of self-love, self- respect, and the need to honor his own decisions rather than sacrificing his desires for the sake of familial bonds. Finding joy in life’s simplest pleasures, enables him to shed the illusions that once entrapped him in a cycle of self-deprecation. Together, they face life’s challenges head-on and traverse paths which ultimately lead to Kaalidhar acquiring a fundamental right long denied to him; the ability to read and write. With this new found confidence, Kaalidhar feels empowered by a sense of independence that allows him to make sound decisions, amidst the presence of the growing fog of dementia.
While the movie may have had its shortcomings, they pale in comparison the profoundly endearing journey of Kaalidhar’s self-discovery, brilliantly supported by with the indomitable presence of Ballu. The narrative resonates with emotional depth and sincerity, rendering even its minor flaws easily dwarfed.
The towering performances by the enigmatic Abhishek Bachchan and the prodigious Daivik Bhagela effortlessly immerse the viewer in a world that eloquently articulates and explores the nuanced need for emotionally healthy relationships that provide a sense belonging, acceptance and necessitates the importance of authentic self-love. This is a narrative that transcends the rigid boundaries imposed by society, gently underscoring the profound significance of prioritizing self-love above external validation and relinquishing the compulsion to sacrifice one’s desires for the approval of others, free from the weight of judgment or prejudice.
Absolutely loved the movie, currently streaming on ZEE5. A must-watch.
