Pathaan | Movie Review

What gets your adrenaline pumping is action-packed spy movies! They have a penchant for yoking raw emotions of patriotism that are inherently imbued in every heart, irrespective of the nation it represents. The eternal fight between peace-mongers and those who partake in wars persists and always will. Ask a spy, a warrior, an agent, a soldier, or a villain (not fighting in your country’s interest) who is ready to die for his/her country fighting in the enemy lines.

What feelings engulf and empower them? Where do they harness this capacity to implement the intellect with a passion for vengeance that has to be vetted out at a crucial juncture? These questions are irrefutable for we can’t even fathom the concoction of emotions that they experience and our brave warriors override them nonchalantly. The question of which side, right or wrong gets diluted, for nothing can be compared to the overwhelming surge of raw rage and passion to avenge for their country’s integrity or personal motives overrule all factors of sanity and humanity. No amount of heartfelt gratitude can express our solidarity toward our heroes who have borne innumerable sacrifices for civilian security.

All these emotions are meticulously ensconced in this spy verse. Pathaan is a fictional story of an Indian RAW spy who is also the main protagonist of this movie. The role is immaculately sashayed by the undisputed king of Indian cinema, a living legend who needs no introduction; none other than Shah Rukh Khan. He plays the pivotal role of a valiant warrior who unflinchingly engages in combat against the ISI military intelligence that works in tandem with terrorists to infiltrate and cause mass destruction through Rakhtbeej against India for their scheming motives. The plot is crisp, and well-articulated on-screen for it leaves no room for shenanigans that could lead to redundancies of any kind (unnecessary songs, etc.) It’s a visual spectacle, with unprecedented and indomitable power of the VFX, sprinkled with a dash of oomph, style, and romance to tickle one’s senses. The perfect characterization firmly envelopes the narrative beautifully depicting the perennial war between good and evil.

Pathaan is India’s answer to Ethan Hunt’s character in the movie Mission Impossible. One can’t ignore the similarities, however, the concept of patriotism is beautifully encapsulated in this film. The power of patriotism ignites the fire of revenge in Pathaan who rises like a phoenix and is a harbinger of hope for the impossible mission. Only a king who has ruled and won hearts over decades could bring this character to life. The subtle nuances of how Pathaan walks and moves, the swirl of his hair, the voice, he’s a riveting monster of a beast to die for!! A blazing fireball scintillating our screens. He is like the luminosity of light that stands for what is just, right and truthful.

The effervescence of darkness/evil epitomizes power, beauty, and sin. There’s a delectable pleasure when one willingly succumbs to the power of chaos, and who better than John to essay this role? John’s an amazing performer who dominates the screen with his menacingly good looks, wickedness, and panache. He looked drop-dead gorgeous in those white trunks; wait, am I salivating…it reminded me of Axl Rose in white shorts crooning one of his popular songs. Deepika plays an ISI agent with aplomb. She is a perfect example of how a woman spy should be a combustible combination of beauty and brains.

Hats off to Siddharth Anand for bringing such a fantastic project to life. It’s a phenomenal movie and what a comeback for Shahrukh! It’s a treat for all Shahrukh fans, myself included. Kudos to the entire team #Pathaan. What mission is Pathaan on? What is Rakhtbeej? Will John accomplish the ask? What about Deepika? Well, if these questions intrigue you, then you’ve gotta watch this movie. I loved it for sure!
