Bhediya | Movie Review

Mankind’s proclivity with folklore (Greek mythology), especially the species (shape-shifters) has intrigued our curiosity by providing fodder to our thoughts, titillating our senses and experience. As captivating a stimuli it may be, it piques our intelligence with its aftermath that results in violence, gory and death. The concept of werewolves isn’t new, however it’s a first for Indian cinema. (correct me if I’m wrong)

Let the drums roll! What a movie! The movie ‘Bhediya’ gets the audience hooked from the word go…The narrative is crisp and seamless, justifying 2 hours 36 minutes of the time frame that passes by in a jiffy. There wasn’t a single dull moment and my mind didn’t deviate from the screen for even a fraction of a second, as I was glued and transported to Bhaskar’s riveting life that gradually opens to a confluence of myriad comic, unwanted & unwarranted chaotic life situations – brilliantly captured and immaculately performed by Varun Dhawan.

It is a fictional story and the writing is spot on. Bhaskar (Varun) is the main protagonist of this movie. A work assignment takes him all the way deep into the pristine woods of Arunachal Pradesh. During one of his work recce, Bhaskar gets attacked by a werewolf (Icchadari Bhediya). Fortunately or unfortunately, he is saved however, in the process of saving his life he gets bitten by a werewolf on his bum. All hell breaks loose! The story of Bhaskar’s life is a wondrous amalgamation of unending twists and turns, what with the deftly crafted supporting characters – friends who bring out the best in him.

This review would be incomplete if I don’t acknowledge the power-packed performances of our brilliant actors. Abhishek Banerjee – who plays Janardhan’s character. What craft! Subtle expressions, I’m a fan! Deepak Dobriyal – I’m falling short of words here, how can someone perform with such ease and finesse? Varun is incredible, Bhediya has to be one of his best performances till date, and he has outperformed himself especially in the scene where he as a man goes through the entire rigmarole of turning into a werewolf. It was so believable, a commendable job by the VFX team! The man who helmed this entire conglomeration of events, right from the thought, story, screenplay, dialogues, cinematography, direction and VFX – Amar Kaushik, brilliance personified!

There are no rough edges, the scenic picturesque locations of Arunachal Pradesh are beautifully utilized and ensconced with the amazing kaleidoscope of colours (VFX) with a very vivid and descriptive screenplay. Great editing and spectacular VFX makes this movie a visual delight and a fast paced entertainer.

Will Bhaskar remain a Bhediya for the rest of his life? Will he be able to accomplish the assignment successfully? What about his love life? And where does Kriti Sanon fit in all this? Well if these questions intrigue you, I suggest that you go to the nearest theatre and watch this comic thriller with your loved friends and family.
