Tomb of Sand – Geetanjali Shree

Word – a synchronized expression of cumulative sounds when subjected to denote a state of feeling; strike a chord with the reader/listener. When coherently used together in synergy, they become a conduit between the seen and the unseen, between reality and imagination. Words when subjugated with precision provide sustenance to our thoughts and actions.

In the context of writing, you would rarely come across books that open a canopy of raw emotions within the reader wherein each line induces a sense of introspection, invoking feelings of melancholy through reliving one’s memories. The beauty and subtlety of these lines depict various connotations that can be interpreted in various ways.

I’m reading the sixth chapter of this exemplary book ‘Tomb of Sand’ originally written in Hindi by Geetanjali Shree and later translated into English by Daisy Rockwell. I’m astounded by the quality, depth, and sheer lavishness of the wordplay. The intriguing content slowly and gradually engulfs readers to deep dive in order to familiarize themselves with the characters. The writing is unblemished, rich in poetry with metaphors that resonate.

These lines got me thinking: “The door. Not many knew that this was no ordinary door. Generations had dwelled within the walls it upheld.” In my opinion, the door takes you on a journey of self-exploration reminiscing one’s past events and experiences. What an imagination! The language is succulent and rhythmic and it flows taking you past that door, to faraway distinct places and instances that are beyond our current reality.
